ICTAN is looking for volunteers for a clinical trial on hydroxytyrosol bioavailability

Estudio Biodisponibilidad ICTAN CSIC

The Institute of Food Science and Technology and Nutrition (ICTAN-CSIC) is looking for volunteers to participate in a clinical trial on the bioavailability of hydroxytyrosol, an antioxidant compound derived from olives. This trial is part of the project ‘Cardiometabolic properties of omega-3 functionalised with hydroxytyrosol in healthy and at-risk populations’ (PID2021-125259OB-I00), funded by the State Plan for Scientific, Technical and Innovation Research 2021-2023. Dr. Raquel Mateos, head of the research group ‘Phytochemicals, nutrition and health’ (PHYTOCHEMICALS), leads the study.

The main objective of this research is to analyse how hydroxytyrosol is absorbed when administered together with an omega-3 fatty acid in different formulations. To do this, we need the participation of men and women between 18 and 45 years of age with a body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 25 kg/m², who meet a series of requirements, such as not being smokers, not following vegetarian or vegan diets, and not being under pharmacological treatment or taking dietary supplements.

Volunteers must be available to come to ICTAN on three specific dates, spending a maximum of 12 hours per visit. As part of the trial, an intravenous line will be used to take samples, which will allow the absorption of hydroxytyrosol in the body to be closely monitored. In addition, participants will receive a detailed report on their health status, olive oil to consume during the study and a reward for their participation.
