White Paper on Nutrition in Spain

The White Paper on Nutrition in Spain, the result of a specific agreement between the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) and the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN), was presented on 20 March 2013 in the Spanish Ministerio de Sanidad, Servicios Sociales e Igualdad (Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality).

The White Paper on Nutrition in Spain, which adopts a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threats) structure, consists of 9 sections that group 63 chapters dealing with multidisciplinary subjects. It has been written by authors of recognized experience in the field of nutrition or related subjects, as well as experts from the administrations with responsibilities in the field of nutrition. Among them are several investigators from the Department of Metabolism and Nutrition (ICTAN-CSIC), who took on the responsibility of those devoted to research on the intake and status of vitamins and minerals, as well as to studies dealing with eating disorders.

This white paper constitutes a pioneering tool in Spain and seeks to be a reference with regard to nutrition, not only in the academic and/or scientific setting, but first and foremost, and as a novel approach, for the different administrations responsible for the design and implementation of nutritional and food policies.
